How Much Should I Charge for an Immigration Evaluation?

Determining the appropriate fee for an immigration evaluation can be a challenging task. It is important to strike a balance between being fairly compensated for your services and ensuring that clients can afford your assistance. While some individuals may not have significant concerns about money, many others do. There are various methods you can use to determine a reasonable fee.

One option is to research how much other professionals in your area charge for similar evaluation services. Many providers disclose their prices on their websites, which can serve as a helpful starting point for you.

Charging an hourly rate is another approach, but there are considerations to keep in mind. As you embark on this type of work, you may initially work at a slower pace and spend more time writing, reviewing, and finalizing reports. Billing by the hour may result in a cost that is unaffordable for your clients and also means you will earn less as you gain experience, which is counterproductive.

Alternatively, you can estimate the time it will take to conduct the evaluation and determine a flat fee, which can vary depending on the type of evaluation (e.g., waivers, VAWA, asylum, etc.). However, several factors can influence the length of the evaluation, such as the interviewee's background history, complex trauma experiences, the need for psychological measures, evaluating multiple people, using an interpreter, and reviewing additional records. Each of these factors requires careful consideration when setting a flat fee.

It's important to recognize that complex immigration cases can be costly for clients, with expenses including attorney's fees, immigration filing fees, and related costs. This financial burden often discourages individuals from pursuing the immigration process. Considering this, it is worth keeping the potential financial strain on clients in mind when determining your fees.
